If planting a relatively large area, hydro seeding can be completed in a very short period of time. It can be very effective for hillsides and sloping lawns to help with erosion control and quick planting. Hydro-seeding will typically cost less initially than planting with sod, but will be relatively the same by the time sod quality is reached. Results are often quick with high planting rates producing germination in about two weeks and mowing maintenance beginning around 6 to 8 weeks from the date of application. Fiber mulch accelerates the growing process by maintaining moisture around the seeds thereby increasing the rate of germination.

The disadvantages associated with hydro-seeding are: (1) weed seeds that are in the soil also germinate and grow along with the seed that is hydro-seeded (2) water consumption is higher due to bare soil, or lack of ground cover, (3) extra fertilization is required to get sod quality lawn.   These weeds can range from grass type weeds to broad leaf weeds.  At some point these weeds will have to be removed either by chemical application, or by natural methods.

Hydro-seeding can take up to 2 years to fill in to sod quality!
